A note about the early days of the Burbank Tonight Show that came up in this podcast…Until May of 1973, most Tonight Shows were aired on a one day delay. The tape of each show (actually two copies of each show) were sent by courier (via jet) from Burbank to New York for air the next day.
Carson hated that arrangement, because the monolog jokes could be stale a day later, but satellite time was so expensive, this was the system they used for the first year after they moved to Burbank (and for most of the West Coast “visits” when the show was still based in NYC).
When Johnny moved to Burbank, he stipulated he would agree to the delay, but only for a year. On May 1, 1973, the show henceforth aired on the same day as it was taped.
I love Ray!
Nice to hear you on the “Air”, Ray! You plugged Devonshire too!
Just to expand on this, I actually wrote about a dozen Originals for the show with several hundred air plays. Ray Dewey
